🧠 Current Situation May 26, 2026
The Viv Ansanm ("Living Together") gang coalition — combining the G9 and G-Pèp federations under the de facto leadership of Jimmy "Barbecue" Chérizier — now controls an estimated 85% of Port-au-Prince territory, including the main seaport, primary road arteries, and all major approaches to the capital. The Haitian state exercises authority only within heavily fortified enclaves.
The Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission, led by Kenya and authorized by UNSC Resolution 2699 (2023), has deployed approximately 1,000 personnel — less than half the 2,500 authorized ceiling. Kenya committed 1,000 officers but has faced logistical and legal challenges. The mission has been hampered by inadequate equipment, unclear rules of engagement, and gang adaptations to patrol patterns.
Haiti's humanitarian crisis has reached unprecedented scale. The UN estimates 1.1 million internally displaced persons, with 5.4 million people facing acute food insecurity. The Artibonite region — Haiti's agricultural breadbasket — has seen gang expansion that has disrupted the 2025-2026 growing season, threatening the food security of the entire country.
