🧠 Current Situation May 26, 2026
People's Liberation Army air and naval activity in the Taiwan Strait remains elevated above pre-2022 baselines but has not crossed thresholds indicative of imminent large-scale military action. PLA aircraft crossed the Taiwan Strait median line on 47 occasions in the past 30 days — consistent with recent months but representing a significant departure from pre-Pelosi-visit norms. Taiwan's Air Force scrambled fighters on 31 of those occasions.
Three PLA naval exercises have been conducted near Taiwan since January 2026, including one that simulated a blockade of major Taiwanese ports. US Indo-Pacific Command has maintained a carrier strike group in the Western Pacific continuously since the most recent PLA exercise. The USS Ronald Reagan (CVN-76) is currently operating in the Philippine Sea.
Taiwan's Legislative Yuan approved a record defense budget of $19.1 billion (2.5% of GDP) for 2026, with procurement priorities including additional Patriot batteries, Harpoon coastal defense missiles, and indigenous submarine commissioning. The US has accelerated arms transfer timelines for previously approved packages, including F-16V upgrades and M1A2T Abrams tanks.
